1940年3月，詹姆斯·凯恩出生在纽约。在密执安州立大学上学时，凯恩在橄榄球和空手道运动上表现出杰出的天份，后来开始迷上表演，在《IRoam》和《Mandingo》等非老百汇剧目中亮现。1963年他在银幕处女作《花街神女》（IrmalaDouce）中扮演水手，1965年影片《龙虎大飞车》（RedLine7000）和次年的西部片《龙虎盟》（ElDorado）给观众留下印象，但真正让他们感动的是1971年电视电影《布里安之歌》（BriansSong）中凯恩摧

凯恩90年代的作品以《米赛丽》和《昨天、今日、永远》中的表现最为出色。曾与DeeJayMattis、SheilaRyan、IngridHajed 有过三段婚姻，先后育有二子一女。1995年与现任妻子LindaStokes再婚，育有两子。近年参演的作品有2000年的《枪之道》和《家族生意》，2003年的《狗城》和《大精灵》。

詹姆斯·凯恩（1892年—1977年）如今被公认为美国小说中的硬派大师之一。他出生于巴尔的摩，是华盛顿学院院长之子，曾做过巴尔的摩报界的记者，第一次世界大战期间服役于美国远征军。退役后，凯恩受聘于安纳波利斯的圣约翰学院。任新闻学教授，之后又效力于H．L．门肯主编的《美国信使》。后来，他还为沃尔特·李普曼主办的《纽约世界报》写过评论，并一度担任《纽约人》的总编辑。最后，他去了好莱坞，做了一名电影剧本作者。凯恩的第一部小说《邮差总敲两次门》（1934年），一出版就引起了轰动，又因被认为“有伤风化”而在波士顿受到指控。诺贝尔文学奖得主法国文学大师阿尔贝·加缪声称他的小说《局外人》便是受该书的启发创作出来的。如今该书已成为经典小说，列选“20世纪百部最佳英语小说”。第二年，凯恩又发表了另一部小说《加倍赔偿》（1935年）。该书的出版再次证明凯恩不愧为黑色浪漫小说的艺术巨匠。凯恩一共出版了18部作品，去世前正致力于自传的写作。
